Thoughts on My Personal vs Project Design Style
“What is your interior design style?” This is a question I’m often asked during discovery calls.
While I’m drawn to all styles of design in general - the styles that speak to my heart are warm, vibrant and colorful.
Warmth to me conveys comfort. Warmth does not always mean reds, oranges and yellows. You can have a warm gray - and I will almost always select a warm gray over a cool grey. Warmth can be created with layering, lighting, texture in materials wall & window coverings etc.
Vibrancy is all about creating visual interest, contrasts and making the space come alive. Vibrancy can come from color, but it can also come from mixing styles, and mixing scale using unexpected elements that work together cohesively. Spaces that are perfectly color coordinated or use coordinating furniture pieces from a collection often lack vibrancy. It can come from mixing materials, even mixing sheens such as matte & polished. Plants are a great way to infuse vibrancy.
Everyone has one element that moves them the most and for me, its color! I’m probably not the best fit for a client who wants a neutral color palette. Anywhere from a pop of color to a maximalist use of color is my happy space. This definitely comes from my Indian heritage. My mind explodes (in a good way) when I’m in a sari shop. I’m like a kid in a candy store.
In a world that is increasingly global, a mix of styles feels more authentic to who we are at this point in time. I’m not excited by every trend I see; I feel the excitement can fizzle out quickly and a balance of classic and modern is more sustainable.
But my projects are not only about my aesthetics. They are mostly about my client’s. I listen, observe, and work hard to understand what moves you so I can create a space that nurtures you, that you are proud of, and that you love coming home to! Sometimes this means pushing clients to step out of their comfort zone and think beyond what they’re used to seeing. Sometimes it means respectfully declining not-so-great ideas. But the guided dialogue and collaboration always means the end product is a home that truly supports your unique lifestyle & aesthetic.
On client projects, my goal is to curate a space unique to the client that brings the emotional response that ‘home’ carries for them. If you look through my project portfolio, you’ll notice how varied the projects are. This is because the designs are personalized for the client and for their home. What you’ll be sure to perceive is warmth, vibrance and color throughout.
